About this deal

Parker-Chan’s characters struggle to break this cycle, and the nuance with which they’re portrayed makes us root for them. and i'm glad i didn't because there is a delicate thread of hope for a better future running throughout the novel that slowly gets stronger towards the end.

He Who Drowned the World is a heart-wrenching study of grief, power, and pain that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from the first page. I didn’t do a reread of SWBTS before this came out, so I was fully relying on my memory to help me remember important events and such. There were many twists and turns throughout the story, but what made them land so effectively was the bleeding heart at the centre of each betrayal. Ouyang wore his anger on his sleeve, and he was so consumed by grief that he couldn’t find an outlet to express it other than resorting to self-harm.I would recommend this duology to someone who is used to Western fantasy and wants to change scenery, likes when books start very slow-paced and character-driven and get more and more complex the more you read and appreciates having some very dramatic scenes. And his dig at Ouyang and Esen saying he hopes they'll find the courage to be together in another life hurt sooo good.

If Madam Zhang had known the true extent of Zhu’s physical lacks—which, as far as matters of masculine anatomy went, included more than broad shoulders or a right hand—no doubt she’d have considered even Zhu’s present accomplishments to have been impossible. He wants to achieve this vengeance and have it be done, he wants this gaping wound inside of him to stop flowing out blood, he wants to reach the end before his pain bleeds him dry. From her eagle’s vantage she could see no true obstacles on that path—only small bumps that would barely check her as she ran headlong towards her goal.On the plain the two generals inclined their heads in respect; conveyed and received the formal message of surrender; and withdrew.

My love for the characters is so exceptionally strong (Xu Da steals my heart as always) and I cannot exaggerate how viscerally I relate to them and how heart-breaking this book truly was. he was the moon eating the sun, and it was his racing shadow that stole the life from the world below. There is not a single moment in the first 95% of the book where someone is moved by kindness or decency. A truly memorable fantasy duology that I will be thinking about for a long time to come and has set a new standard for me for what I want out of fantasy books from this point forward.Zhu, The Radiant King, finds herself feeling unstoppable after her victories and wants to crown herself emperor.

the sheer ugliness and brutality of these characters burst out from every page in a way that's both painful and strangely cathartic. The conclusion of the Radiant Emperor duology makes use of every last word and stamps this series onto the map as a new must-read of the fantasy canon.
