Then, to boot, forget the movie, sorry movies, and the musical, and the BBC Folk Award of 2011 for upholding the Best Traditions of Folk. From the makers of the 2018’s hit ‘Finding Your Feet’, this new movie starring Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Tuppence Middleton, Noel Clarke and directed by Chris Foggin is already tipped to be the feel good hit of the year. This year they've reached 104,000 followers on Facebook, signed a fifth album deal with Island Records. It was a whirlwind 12 months and the demands of the music industry took their toll; where once they hauled nets, they're now expected to land hits and the notorious 'second album syndrome', plus the pressures, pitfalls and temptations of their newfound fame, started to bite hard.

They still occasionally perform in Port Isaac, singing on The Platt (at the back of the beach) in the summer for charity. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH).

It is a voyage that has led them to be here with you tonight to share in their unique brand of entertainment. They are spotted by a fish-out-of-water music manager on a trip from London, who must learn that there is more to life than selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame. Five years later, whilst minding their own business singing on the Platt at Port Isaac, they were rudely interrupted and discovered and, as they say, the rest is history. The men who turned up that night, mostly in their early thirties or thereabouts, were all involved in singing in various local choirs and at folk events, pilot gig racing regattas and the like. Based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their hit 2019 movie, 'Fisherman's Friends: The Musical' is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music which smashed box office records in Cornwall.

All members of the band have cameos in the film and, according to Ashworth, "the singing is a blend of the voices of the group themselves and of the actors. Sole Mates comprised tracks that the band had performed during their previous two tours and featured additional instrumentation from Phil Beer from Show of Hands and Emma Murfin from Cornwall-based folk act Black Velvet. In addition to this, the combination of their voices produced a muscularity which seemed to suit the genre of both sea shanties and songs of the sea, rooted very much in the labour-intensive seafaring traditions of crews of working men. The band have appeared on BBC One's The One Show on two occasions, been the subject of an ITV1 documentary that charted their early success, a Sky Arts documentary which featured their performance at the Celtic Connections festival, BBC's Countryfile with John Craven and many local news items. In July 2015 the album Proper Job was released on the Sony Music label, in association with the St Austell Brewery, who brew a beer of the same name.

If an album is 'missing' that you think deserves to be here, you can include it in your own chart from the My Charts page!

The Fisherman's Friends' performances combine traditional songs of the sea with more contemporary folk music and a large dash of humour. The band have also appeared at Towersey Festival, Wickham Festival, Beautiful days, Costa Del Folk, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Tunes in the Dunes, Boardmasters and Celtic Connections, among others. The film was directed by Chris Foggin and was released in cinemas nationwide in the UK on 15 March 2019.This facilitated the adoption of natural, freewheeling harmonies very much in line with traditional Cornish singing practices, as noted by the Reverend Hawker back as far as the early 1800s, where participants would congregate in a semi-circle and ‘strike sound’. In 2010 they re-recorded their single, "No Hopers, Jokers or Rogues", with new lyrics, in support of England's FIFA World Cup campaign in South Africa. The only downside I can think of is that the game's theme is really secondary to the gameplay/mechanisms. At the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards The Fisherman's Friends received The Good Tradition Award for keeping folk music alive and bringing it to new audiences. Forget the sell-out appearances at the Albert Hall, the Festival Hall, the London Palladium and all the fabulous old theatres and opera houses and festivals up and down the land.
