Their interaction, the way they struggle to open up, along with their inner dialogues felt both compelling and amusing.

Honestly, DEAD INSIDE has a Tarantino-esque quality about it in the sense that it is SO over-the-top offensive, SO over-the-top disgusting that it's *almost* funny. This book is horribly revolting but this author is so unbelievably talented that I can't stop myself from reading more. It's like Morrison crawled into the deepest, most demented corners of his mind, pulled out the most revolting, disgusting, fucked up, deranged, necrophile obscenities and fashioned them into prose.Dead Inside” is a very graphic read but, I’m a metalhead, grew up in the 80s/90s watching tons of horror movies and TV shows I probably shouldn’t have been watching at such a young age, and at least for me, this didn’t really bother me as I look at it as just words on paper. I can't even bring myself to describe it in detail, but it's vile, disgusting, and downright fucked up. in the beginning of the story, he meets a woman named Helen, who works at the same hospital as him, and who happens to like eating dead babies.

Okay, before I go on, I should warn you that this next part is what most people would consider to be gross or appalling. When the two of them meet, they embark on a journey of self-discovery as they shatter societal norms while engaging in destructive and abhorrent behavior. It sounds almost like a joke, and maybe it indeed is: A necrophile and a cannibal meet and are instantaneously fascinated by each other, believing to have found a kindred weirdo, the antidote to oneself. It turns out she has a penchant for a certain kind of snack and the pair hit it off, albeit awkwardly. Helen, on the other hand, likes to eat dead babies and as an obstetrician at the maternity ward she is right at the source to her object of desire. The book is extremely well written, and I would love to get into his author's mind, on how he came up with this idea for a book. Even though it deals with extremely sensitive topics, this wasn’t anything I expected at all that ended up being a solid read. This story is pretty much American Psycho meets Exquisite Corpse if Jughead Jones (angsty CW edition) was the narrator, written by someone who never totally outgrew their middle school edgelord phase.

Let me tell you, there's a particular scene featuring a dead fetus that left me feeling dirty and violated just for reading it. In saying all that and with the writing being the only saving grace in my opinion I am definitely interested in reading more from Morrison, hopefully something with different subject matter. Being already familiar with 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧's terrific style, I knew this book would be well written, however, I didn't expect it to have such a deranged dark humor. In this bleak and disturbingly erotic debut novel, iconoclast Chandler Morrison provides readers with a dark exploration of the nature of death, individuality, and generational identity.
