He quotes a lyric to me, from another rapper, about the Garden of Eden. He loves this lyric. “Because everything wouldn’t be everything,” says Dave, “if the Garden of Eden went right.” Strange Meadow Lark" begins with a piano solo that exhibits no clear time signature, but then settles into a fairly ordinary 4 Psychodrama (stylised in uppercase letters) is the debut studio album by British rapper Dave, released on 8 March 2019. [1] It follows his first two EPs, Six Paths (2016) and Game Over (2017). The album features guest appearances from J Hus, Burna Boy and Ruelle. [3] Psychodrama was executive produced by both Dave and Fraser T. Smith. The album features Dave's piano playing, while Smith assisted with Baroque influences, including strings, brass, harps, as well as more contemporary music through the use of drums and the synthesizer.

Once everyone has stopped bustling about and left the photography studio, we perch on high seats and talk Psychodrama. Making it, says Dave, took a lot out of him. (He works hard on his songs: he has called them “gold or silver, something rare or precious”.) He started it on 23 January 2018 (the date opens the album), and finished it last month. So, one year. A year when his life was pretty busy – Hangman came out at the beginning, Funky Friday in October, plus he appeared on Avelino’s U Can Stand Up and tried some acting – and he felt changed by the end of it. He hopes the progression is clear: “From the start, when I was more reluctant to speak, to the end, which is embracing the idea that it’s OK to find out a bit about yourself.”

An early taste of Psychodrama’s follow-up, however, showed that Dave wouldn’t be hemmed in by expectations of worthiness: We’re All Alone in This Together’s (WAAITT) first single, the Stormzy collaboration Clash, barely mentioned politics. A cold, imperious ode to conspicuous consumption, its appeal is hypnotic rather than melodic, the beat characterised by a deliberate sonic flatness. It was an instant hit – reaching No 3 in the charts – and now well on its way to summer pop ubiquity, a testament to Dave’s multifaceted pulling power. Several years ago, I started calling it the Mona Lisa of pop,” Chris Duffy, son of Brian, told AnOther magazine in 2015. Aged 17 when his father took the photo that tops this list of David Bowie album covers, Chris witnessed some of the Aladdin Sane recording sessions first hand. “It has become a cultural icon… there isn’t really an image that is as ubiquitous.”
