With random thoughts in the ridiculousness of every day adventure, this is a fun tale with tons of illustrations and zest. I have a soft spot for this series, so love it when a new book comes out. Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic (at some things)

Aged around 10 years old, Tom is the younger of the two children of Frank and Rita Gates, and the younger brother of Delia. [4] He attends Oakfield Primary School where he is in Mr Fullerman's Class 5F, under headmaster Mr Keen. Children in his class include Marcus Meldrew (who sits next to and consistently annoys Tom in class), and Amy Porter (who also sits next to Tom, but whom Tom hopes to impress). Also in his year at Oakfield is his best friend Derek Fingle, who also lives next door to him. Tom has a second neighbour, June Jones, that annoys Tom and dislikes his band. I initially thought of giving these books two starts, but I think one star really is showing the reality of these books much better. Do not bother. Tom's doing everything possible to stay out of trouble but somehow he's got THREE sad faces on the school achievement chart! Fans of Tom Gates will be pleased to hear that the latest book in the series from Liz Pichon is now available for quizzing. Liz recently read part of the first book in the series as part of our Read to a Million Kids campaign – you can watch the video here. The latest book, Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic (at some things), sees Tom and his class go on an adventure holiday trip. Cue midnight feasts, capsized boats, and mischievous practical jokes. Tom also discovers the creative medium of banana doodles, which we in the quizzing team have very much enjoyed trying out for ourselves! No, she’s still not looking. Marcus says he’s got five merits as well. “Great,” I say. “We’re like twins now,” says Marcus. (He’s so annoying.) I show Mom and Dad my story because I think they’ll be pleased with me (for a change). 30Families can talk about the humor and prankster spirit in the Tom Gates series. What makes Tom so appealing? What other books have you read that have characters like Tom? Absolute HIT! My little one has loved reading this. She has been really engaged and finished in record time. Brilliant book." Kylie83 I'm a turtle On the way home, I see posters for my favorite band, , all over town. Even this doesn’t cheer me up. Derek does his best to make me laugh. But all I can think about is Amy calling me an idiot (harsh) and Marcus calling us losers. “Look on the bright side,” Derek says. But when I ask Derek what the bright side actually is . . . he doesn’t know. “It’s a saying.” Great. I’ll have to think of a way to make it up to Amy, which is not going to be easy. 40

They are written to be funny and attractive, by using negative behaviours and pretending they are normal, by promoting a way of thinking that is toxic and by stigmatizing pretty much everyone in the family and school of the main character. While a few nice messages are wrapped up in this tale, the book centers around one thing—silly fun. Tom is pretty normal for his age, and his mind wanders everywhere but in the responsible direction. He's a nice guy and simply tries to get through the chaos called life as best he can, which makes him easy to relate to. The situations he runs into come from daily life and reflect those which average kids will face. And while all of it seems dramatic at times, it's Tom's very honest, uncensored thoughts, which make it a hilarious read. I am REALLY looking forward to the SCHOOL ACTIVITY TRIP (if I can find my form). Delia wants me to go too. There'll be LOADS of excellent things to do. Like:
