Description

The book is almost a textbook of how a dedicated actor can succeed in his career if he never gives up, works hard, and makes some difficult choices. This book really details David Jason's career form the rely days right up until his acting in the BBC drama series, Frost. Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. I loved the stories about his family, particularly his mother (her explanation of the noises in wartime as 'just God moving his furniture around' made an impression on me) and the bygone age transmitted in these tales alongside his dry humour and jovial story-telling made this an interesting read. However, he did manage to dispel some rumours that always seemed to come up as gospel truth in these ‘biographies’.

Obviously, this book wouldn’t be able to get away without including the phenomenon that is Only Fools And Horses.

But life hasn't all been so easy: from missing out on a key role in Dad's Army to nearly drowning in a freak diving accident, David has had his fair share of ups and downs, and has lost some of his nearest and dearest along the way. I was really looking forward to finding out more about him through his long awaited autobiography My Life. On my list of favourite actors and great to read about other stars and all the plays/tv Sir David has been connected too, especially the "governor" Ronnie Barker. From Open All Hours to The Darling Buds of May to his starring roles as Detective Inspector Frost in A Touch of Frost and, of course, Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in Only Fools and Horses. Like other reviewers, I was initially disappointed that David only reads the introduction - however Michael Fenton Stevens does such an admirable job of narrating and captures all the liveliness of David's story. episodes; A revival of the original series, featuring original cast members Lynda Baron and Maggie Ollerenshaw. Jason appeared on stage in the West End in the farce No Sex Please, We're British playing Brian Runnicles for 18 months in 1973.Winner of the National Book Awards Autobiography of the Year The long-awaited autobiography of one of Britain's best-loved actors Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing.
