Description

Pure Digital One review The One is its entry-level DAB radio, and its performance means it should sell in shedloads Stable reception: Bluetooth radios with DAB+ technology offer stable quality, even if reception is weak, while FM radios often come with static noise. Out of the box the radio sounds reasonably good for a radio at this price. Music sounds a little bass heavy and when tuned into Heart on DAB digital radio the bass can be too imposing and the vocals sound a bit dull.

From our state-of-the-art headquarters near London, we aim to unite the world of music and radio with timelessly beautiful designs, unrivalled sound quality and flawless connectivity. The Pure One Classic Series 2 radio is a portable device that features a digital tuner and supports both DAB and FM radio bands. With a total of 30 preset stations, users have the convenience of easily accessing their favorite channels. This radio features a 3.5 mm headphone connectivity option, allowing users to connect their preferred headphones without any hassle. Its portability makes it suitable for on-the-go use and offers flexibility in terms of where it can be used. Pure’s DAB+ radio with CD player is a device that can receive the digital DAB+ format and is also able to play CDs. It looks like a normal CD player but has the added functionality of a DAB+ radio. Once you own such a radio, all you need to do is turn it on and let it search the available radio stations so you can choose and listen to your preferred programme.

Compact and capable

I can’t receive Radio X on my Pure Evoke 1XT. Where do I apply for the free software available to upgrade my radio? Diversity can be so easy: Do you want to tune in and listen to classic USW or DAB/DAB+ radio? Or do you prefer to dial up your Spotify Connect via Bluetooth - be it from your smartphone, tablet or notebook? Or, easier yet, how about connecting, for instance, your turntable to your Pure radio via AUX for even greater choice? Unlimited number of stations: Reception of up to 30,000 stations and streaming providers from all over the world via DAB+ technology. Several Pure digital radios can be upgraded to enable reception of DAB+ radio stations. Compatible radios are listed on Pure’s update centre. If your radio is listed you can enter the serial number to access the software for the update. The Pure One Elite Series 2 is listed as a radio for which an update is available.

Switch-on the Pure Elan Connect and you’ll be taken straight to network settings, not only for fetching internet radio stations and podcasts, but also to keep time. There follows a slightly confusing set of choices for things such as daylight savings – for which the default is ‘no’… why would anyone want a radio that gives the wrong time for half the year?!. Nevertheless, at least connecting to the home Wi-Fi network is easy if you’re using a WPS-enabled Wi-Fi router. It’s quite simple: DAB+ radios allow you to receive all your preferred stations at the best possible quality and without any static noise. The advantages of DAB and DAB+ at a glance: As of December 2020 the Pure Elan One is the cheapest digital radio we can find from the brand. Sound quality from the Pure Elan One Once setup is complete – the world is your oyster, with the Pure Elan Connect providing access to 25,000 radio stations. But the real advantage of web radio is access to podcasts, which the Pure Elan Connect presents in a simple file structure. You can scroll down lists of podcasts and episode titles, for which the display is just about large enough. Will alarms, presets or other saved settings be deleted if my radio is disconnected from the mains? The Pure One EcoPlus DAB Radio from the world leaders in DAB comes a DAB and FM portable radio that looks good, sounds great and is unbelievably easy to use. With its stylish exterior, chrome controls, and great audio performance, The Pure One EcoPlus DAB Radio looks and sounds fantastic, wherever you listen. After connecting the radio to the mains or inserting the batteries a push of the knob will switch on the radio. The radio will scan for digital radio stations the first time that it’s turned on and subsequently return to the last listened to station. The benefit of a small TFT display over a traditional LCD display is that you can see more information at once. This means programme information, such as the name and artist of the current song, can be seen at a glance rather than waiting for it to scroll across. The larger display also makes it easier to browse radio stations as seven can be shown at a time as a list. The radio has a single 2.5″ full range driver and the specifications give the output as 3 Watts. At full volume the radio fills a kitchen and can still be heard over a kettle or cooking without the sound distorting.

In many ways it is a bigger, stereo version. There's a, perhaps more mature, matt finish, and there's the addition of the ability to pause, rewind and fast forward live radio. This ‘Revu' button automatically records the past 15 minutes so you can always rewind if you missing something. The reduced, clear design with its compact measurements conceals lavish sound technology combined with ridiculously easy handling, allowing you to use your internet radio in your living room, your Bluetooth radio in the kitchen, and your very compact radio in the bathroom, while the radio alarm is ideal for the bedroom and the portable radio provides you with sound all around - in your own outdoors space or on the road. No cable required: Your favourite tunes wherever you want them Don't use washing up liquid and hot water. I tried this on ours and the covering started peeling off instead of cleaning. CD meets internet radio: DAB+ or DAB plus Pure radio with CD player equals a 2-in-1 solution that allows you to listen to CDs as well as DAB+ radio stations with a single device. Radio alarm DAB+ by Pure It’s still a perfectly serviceable, clear interface – just getting on a bit. The main menu is a simple list of key features: Digital Radio (i.e. DAB, it still has top billing), The Lounge, Media Player, FM Radio and Auxiliary Input.DAB digital and FM radio with full Band III DAB reception capability, for reception of all UK DAB broadcasts. Compliant with ETS 300 401 and capable of decoding all DAB transmission modes 1-4 up to and including 192 kbps. And if that was not enough, the signal can transmit additional information such as artist, song title, album cover and even videos. 80% less energy consumption for improved signal reception is another advantage. The 2.4″ TFT colour display has a resolution of 320×240 and in digital radio mode shows the name of the station and programme information, the time and signal strength. Tuning into Classic FM in the FM mode

So the Pure One Classic Series II is a pretty good all-rounder but there are obstacles ahead of it, and the most dangerous are – at the moment – its predecessors. The amendments made in this “Series II” adjustment are not essential, while the falling price of the old guard makes buying one while they’re still around seem very attractive. You can nab the first-gen Elite model for five pounds less than the Series II at present, and we’d rather have the sound quality improvements of its dual-speaker system than the rather limited recording skills of the Listen Later feature. To browse the list of stations the forward/Stations button has to be pressed first. This opens the list of stored stations which can be browsed by turning the rotary knob left and right. A different station can be selected by pushing in the knob. This works well but if you forget to press the Stations button first you’ll find yourself changing the volume. The sound signature blasts away the slightly nasal sound that small kitchentop radios can suffer from, but be sure to keep your expectations sensible. There’s just a single 3in driver to deal out tunes and spoken word broadcasts, and it does sound conspicuously small when compared to larger systems, or Pure’s bigger Elite models. It won’t replace your hi-fi, or even a mini system, but let it do its job on home turf and it’s great – in the kitchen, bedroom or conservatory the One Classic Series II offers a solid compromise between price, size and sound quality.

The former is essentially identical to the product on review here, but doesn't include internet radio, while the latter is a stereo version of the Pure Elan Connect. So, if internet radio isn’t essential, then you can spend less; if you want the same features and stereo sound, you can spend more. At Pure, we live and breathe our motto “joyful listening” and we want for our customers to feel the same, which is why we have taken our easy-to-use features and wrapped them up in a timeless and simple design. CDs are forever - a CD player is still worth its money When adjusting the volume of the radio or changing radio stations sometimes a sound can be heard through the headphones. This seems to occur in time with the change of information on the display. It’s disappointing to find this on the radio and whether it bothers you could depend on your own listening experience.
