Description

By the 1960s the brewery was riding the wave of Pils-popularity, with their flagship Pilsener selling like, well, cold beer, which in turn fuelled expansion for the company. By the beginning of 2005 the brewery was acquired by German big boys the Radeberger Group, joining a slew of other veteran brewing brands. Now there is a vast range of lagers to choose from for those who don’t want a fuzzy head or midriff bulge.

Pilsner malt greets us as we drink, providing a good base for some herbal and grassy Saaz hops notes to build on. What starts off as a soft bitterness ramps up slowly as we drink, resulting in a pleasing clean bitter taste as we round off the drink. There are hints of citrus in there too, and a slight honey sweetness. Carbonation is not too high and the body is quite light, not veering off too much into watery territory. We get a dry finish to the drink. Fun pours a light amber with a thin head of foam floating up top. The aroma is sharp and grainy yet still pretty clean. There’s no sign of the herbal, peppery notes that Jever’s full-strength pilsner is known for. Like many breweries in Germany – where six in every 100 steins drunk is under 0.5% ABV – Jever has produced a non-alcoholic version of its famous pilsner in more recent times. Called “Fun”, it comes in at under 0.5% ABV.Do not open any bottles shortly after delivery. They are likely to be very volatile and cause spillage. After World War II, the brewery once again found itself experiencing difficult times. Due to a fuel shortage, beer could only be sold from the brewery gates directly to customers. It was also necessary to scour the region's farms for malt. However, there’s little restriction on the types of these ingredients brewers can use. This includes the make up of the water, meaning it’s OK for brewers to treat the water they use so it suits the style of beer they’re brewing. Of course, the breweries don’t tell us that and many use the source of their water as a selling point.

Since 1994, the brewery has belonged to the Dortmunder Brau und Brunnen Group, which was acquired by Radeberger Group, at the beginning of 2005. Friesisches Brauhaus zu Jever was founded in 1848 by an innkeeper, Diedrich König, in the Lower Saxony town of Jever, near Germany’s north coast. In a period where most beer was supplied in barrels, Jever Brewery were one of the first to use custom bottles with a dark green colour for their beers. This early form of branding for the company is a feature that continues to this day. The brewery has gone through several owners and head brewers over the years, with one having the idea to add more hops to their brews, creating the unique ‘Frisian’ flavour they’re known for. Since the 1950s their beer has been sold worldwide, for years under the moniker of ‘Jever Export’, which was a success for the brewery until it was discontinued in the 1990s. Jever Fun is a perfectly quaffable alcohol-free pilsner lager, not reinventing the wheel, but doing what it does with aplomb. Classic pilsner flavours and aromas abound, and if every bar served this I’d be a very happy non-drinker – though I’d probably pour it into a glass to hide the awful branding. Buy Jever Fun One German brewery that does this is Jever, which boasts that the water from its well is unusually pure and soft. This would have had a major influence on it choosing to brew pilsners when it first started producing beer in 1848. Theodor Fetköter's son, who had taken over the business, was killed at the front. The brewery was sold once again, in 1922, to the Bavaria – St. Pauli Brewery, based in Hamburg. Today the Bavaria – St. Pauli Brewery is owned by the Danish Carlsberg Group. By then, beer from Jever had become known outside the region where it was produced. Since 1934, it has been sold under the name "Jever Pilsener". When the "Friesisches Brauhaus zu Jever" was founded by Diedrich König in 1848, it was only one of several breweries in the region. König, however, was convinced from the beginning that his beer was something special. After his death in 1867, his son sold the brewery. Theodor Fetköter took over the brewery. He began by developing the small family business into a large brewery operation, started to advertise and developed special bottles. In 1848, he played an important part in installing the first water supply system in Jever. A cool lager that’s free from alcohol is ideal to refresh and rehydrate after a workout, when you’ve built up a thirst doing manual work, while enjoying outdoor activities or while relaxing with friends.
