However, like sunscreen, LEDs need to be used daily to achieve the desired results. If you’re only visiting your derm’s office once a month for an LED session, you’re most likely not going to see the improvements in lines and wrinkles that you’re hoping for. And you’re going to spend a lot of money for that first-hand knowledge. Dr. Diggs says that these at-home masks can be a great alternative for in-office LED therapy treatments since they are typically more affordable and accessible, and "therefore a better treatment," she says. "The key to LED mask therapies is the selection of the correct light for the skin problem." Firstly, read and follow the instructions that come with your equipment (duh). But there are a few other ways to ensure you get maximum impact: 1) Verify that your device is FDA cleared. Explaining the benefits of the mask, which is made up of three Near-Infrared lights, Posh Spice shared her wisdom, writing: ‘Red light is for collagen and blood flow. White light is anti-inflammatory, healing and firming. Blue is antibacterial and so good for blemish-prone skin.’

While only marginally less expensive than the Dr. Dennis Gross light mask, the TheraFace offers the benefits of light therapy alongside that of percussive massage therapy. It's a versatile, multi-use product that is great for someone who wants a 6-in-1 device that can target multiple skin care issues. It comes with three percussive attachments that massage tired, sore muscles and can ease the pain of TMJ. A facial cleansing brush to ensure the deepest fresh clean. A microcurrent head that works to tighten skin and more. Like the aforementioned light mask, it uses three different light modes: one to target anti-aging, another to prevent and heal acne and a third that is the combination of both. The largest LED device on the market for at-home use, the clinic-grade Dermalux Flex comprises 360 lights and offers a whole range of treatment protocols, from acne-zapping blue light to firming near-infrared. Use it as a canopy over your face, or position it over sore muscles from head to toe. What is LED light therapy? The less distance the light particles need to travel to reach their target, the greater their penetration once they arrive. 3) FYI: It won’t work sitting in your closet. As previously noted, a dermatologist might recommend you stay for an LED session right after your peel or laser treatment to keep resulting redness at bay. But you can also go to a doctor’s office for an LED dose by itself. A next-generation, universal-fit full-face model, this innovative device sits comfortably over the entire face while still actively targeting the entire area, using a total of 100 red LED lights (to stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin to reduce wrinkles, sun spots, sun damage and redness) and 62 blue LED lights (which destroys bacteria and prevents future breakouts).LEDs might never have transitioned from your Christmas lights to your wrinkle-reduction device were it not for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (aka NASA). In 1993, NASA began to explore the idea of using a very narrow spectrum of all available red LED wavelengths to stimulate plant photosynthesis in space. (Spoiler alert: It worked.) But their studies had an interesting side effect—the red LEDs appeared to heal the scientists’ skin lesions as well. LEDs are not a one-and-done. You need to use your apparatus for the time and frequency prescribed. (Generally, a few minutes a day, every day.) On the bright side, you can do an LED treatment morning or night, whenever the mood strikes you—there’s no risk of sun sensitivity. 4) Use your device on clean, dry skin.

This popular and highly rated mask boasts seven different light settings that purport to solve myriad skin issues. Like the above, red and blue light targets anti-aging and acne issues. The company also offers green light it says can help improve pigmentation, yellow light that can soothe skin and reduces redness, purple light to stimulate lymph nodes and relax you, light blue light to soothe allergy-reactive skin and white light to accelerate tissue metabolism. The suggested operating time is between 15 and 20 minutes, though you'll probably want to start slow just a few times a week as you try out the different settings and see what works for you.

With that in mind, I’m happy to say that my skin looked so much better while using the mask. I already use an AHA face serum to help with scars but I found that they went away so much faster when using the mask. I also noticed that I was more likely to get acne if I had gone a few days without using the mask, so it’s true what they say: consistency is key. Are all my pimples magically gone? No—I still get hormonal acne around that time of the month. However, I’ve found that I get fewer random pimples throughout my time using the mask. a. "The energy levels achieved are effective but low, and the light is unlikely to cause damage to the skin or eyes," Dr. Diggs says. LED masks aren't going to completely fix all your issues overnight, but if you use them regularly, you may achieve some impressive results. Take note — most of these masks come with a hefty price tag, but if you want results that rival an in-office treatment, they're worth the splurge! minutes (about 8-10 treatments; combination treatment uses battery faster than respective singular treatments)

What I notice is a more “soft” complexion overall. I think the biggest difference has been in terms of skin texture. Not only does it feel less rough to the touch, but it also looks visibly smoother and softer. Firmer, too. While no mask like this can erase 36 years of expression lines from my forehead, I do feel as if it has tighter everything around those lines — and is thus likely slowing their permanent existence on my resting face.
