Description

Shocking modern conspiracy theories often turn out true after thorough investigation by our society. As humans, we’re drawn to conspiracies because many times, well, they’re more exciting than the truth. But House of Secrets can get gory, too, with talk of live autopsies performed by the pirate captain, a couple of fatal stabbings, kids removing an arrow and stitching up the wound themselves, and an eyeball pierced by an arrow and then plucked out intact.

House of Secrets by Chris Columbus, Ned Vizzini | Waterstones

The next four owners, none of them pure Kentuckians, found themselves driven away for various reasons. It also makes it incredibly hard to really connect with Hazel, which means that the reader really isn't very emotionally invested in the whole story. They think having no cell phone reception and flushing toilets is bad -- until the mercenaries arrive. Brad Meltzer’s latest novel takes a break from the author’s bestselling Beecher White series and introduces readers to a new character named Hazel Nash. But other than that, House of Secrets was a good read that is definitely not for the faint of heart. Plus, there’s another blistering conspiracy lurking behind the scenes, and it’s up to Hazel Nash to expose the truth. There were paragraph breaks in the middle of sentences, no paragraph break where there should have been, missing punctuation at the end of sentences, words with missing letters and words that were a jumble of letters making no sense at all. Some of the relatives he mentioned would come out and say "yeah, I wanna put Ed Sexton away, I'll talk" and then later, they would say "no, nevermind". This leads to lessons in sticking together in a crisis and resisting the temptation for power and glory.

Second, the main characters Hazel is a strong competent woman with an interesting past and third, this seems like it will be the first book in a new series and that makes me really happy. We don’t know Hazel before the car accident that left her brain scrambled, which means we’re getting to know her at the same time she’s getting to know herself. The author uses both names and nicknames of all the children, making it hard to remember who is who.

His 11 children assumed that having sex with their parents was normal, along with seances, cannibalism and torture. As for the book itself, it felt a little disjointed and a lot of the details, especially earlier on, didn't seem necessary. Finally, after a ton of build-up, the plot is resolved so quickly that the whole thing just feels unbelievable. Other, lesser continuing features included "Peter Puptent, Explorer"; "Dolly and the Professor"; "Doctor Rocket"; and "Moolah the Mystic".
