We spend a lot of time categorising people, while forgetting that very few of us sit in these categories neatly and stay there – we all fit into multiple categories. TW: racism, grooming, paedophilia, murder, sexism, misogyny, harassment, mental health, rape ⚠️ This was a really good slow burner that hits you with twists and turns when you least expect it. I absolutely love in books when an author takes a fact, such as this and uses it, expands it and builds a very intriguing interesting character such as this.

In My Other Husband, Dorothy captures the cute awkwardness of a university romance and puts it up against mature endearing marital love.Dorothy was featured on the 2021 Powerlist as one of the most influential Black people in Britain and appeared in GQ Style as a Black British trailblazer. I have to admit the start of the book is confusing, you’re thinking how it’s going to play out but also what’s going to happen.

The many time changes and the different points of view made this difficult to follow at times as I found myself flicking back a few pages to check when the previous chapter was set. I wonder, what music would Zack from Save By the Bell be into … If you came of age in the 90’s you’ll luv the pop culture references. The contrast between then and now could not be starker with events of 25 years ago feeling like a romcom with the writing being light and breezy. I loved the alternating timelines that helped build a picture of the complex relationships between the characters over the years but out of all of them I think I loved Lola the most with her witty attitude and sass.

There’s a lot of character build up and scene setting at the start so it did take me a while to understand where the story was going, but I found Cleo such an original and intriguing character that I was absolutely hooked by her story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I could not see where the story was going and I like that from a book.What I thought was going to be a crime/ thriller, turned out to be a boring story with a few murders briefly mentioned. Writing is all she's ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination.
