Luckily we found this oversized book at a book fayre recently and have so enjoyed seeing these wonderful illustrations again. Briggs continued to work in a similar format, but with more adult content, in Gentleman Jim (1980), a sombre look at the working class trials of Jim and Hilda Bloggs, closely based on his parents. Born in London in 1934, he was inspired by illustrations in newspapers and Punch magazine and applied to art school at the age of 15. The BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates the body of work of an author or illustrator who has made an outstanding contribution to children's literature. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words and his particular style of illustration is unmistakable as are his understated and poignant words of narrative and dialogue. He has black hooked claws and huge yellow teeth; but his white furry coat is warm and soft and Tilly decides he's the cuddliest thing in the whole world. Anyone requiring a detailed and lavishly illustrated account of Briggs’ development as an artist and social satirist need look no further than Nicolette Jones’ excellent study Blooming Books (Cape, 2003). He soaks Tilly in the process of getting into it and already beginning to tire of him, she washes the bear.

A brilliantly clever and funny tale about an unlikely friendship, from beloved children's author Raymond Briggs. It is not as famous as Snowman and I suspect a lot fewer people have seen it, which is probably a reason in itself for seeking it out as an alternative next time the festivities come around. His work has won numerous awards and been adapted for film on several occasions including Ethel and Ernest.Though perhaps not quite as poignant at The Snowman, this tale of Tillie and her brief time with a polar bear is a delight. Even more importantly, they have a tremendous emotional impact on readers, and made them think about history, politics, family life and childhood. A book about his life's work entitled Raymond Briggs: The Illustrators was written by Nicolette Jones and published in 2020. The film, directed by Dianne Jackson and produced by John Coates, was wordless apart from the hit song taken from it, Howard Blake's Walking in the Air, sung by St Paul's Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty. Discussing the impact of Raymond Briggs’ work, Judge Shami Chakrabarti said: "Raymond is a true artistic genius who has touched the hearts of millions of children of all ages.

The third early Hamilton "comics" was Fungus the Bogeyman (1977), featuring a day in the life of a working class bogeyman. Included in the exhibition are works from Briggs’ pioneering titles as well as drawings, hand-lettered typography and page designs from his earliest commissions to The Puddleman (2004). He has, says Nicolette Jones, ‘elevated the standing of the art of strip illustration and added status to children’s books’.Tilly's indulgent parents humor her talk of the bear, clearly not believing in him, but Tilly herself finds that she must work hard to clean up after this ursine visitor. It's interesting that there was a film version of the book, that added parts, and now we would love to see a book version of the film. After briefly pursuing painting, he became a professional illustrator, [1] and soon began working in children's books.
