This post is part of a new series I am involved in called Learning with Manipulatives. Each Tuesday, a group of bloggerswill be sharing hands-on activitiesyou can do with a specific manipulative. This week we are featuring rainbow counters! Practice ordinal numbers: Line up several colors and sizes of bears. Then give your child directions such as, “Find the 3rd green bear,” or “What color is the fifth bear?”. My little guy loved matching the colored bear to the dot, and I counted along with him as he worked. Our little learning session was under five minutes, which is quite typical for this age. They are a great quite play activity that teaches kids matching and counting. Preparation– For this activity you’ll need the teddy bear bus mat, addition cards, number cards and counters.Counting Bear Addition Cards– Practice adding with these addition cards. Laminate them to use over and over again. The best part of using virtual manipulatives is there is no clean-up! No bears will end up under your shelves, get tripped over, stepped on, or lost with these virtual counters. Once all seats at a table are full, collect a point token and remove all teddy counters from that table.He was happy to find that Iron Man was the longest toy! Technically, I think it would be the tallest, but that is a lesson for another day.

Activity 2 – Ordering Numbers and Counting

Counting practice: Students draw a number flashcard and put the correct number of bears on the grid. Or, you display a certain number of bears on the grid and students have to count them.
