It is also important for them to know that having a problem with reading, writing, spelling, or math doesn't mean they are dumb or stupid. The same mental function that produces a genius can also produce those problems. What do Cher, Leonardo da Vinci, Whoopi Goldberg, and Walt Disney all have in common? Dyslexia. Like other dyslexics, Ronald Davis had unusual gifts of creativity and imagination, but couldn't function properly at school. I may find it hard to write a word but I can tell you with 100% certainty I know what that word means inside and out. Read the section on “Holding” in Chapter 28 (“Release and Orientation Review”) of The Gift of Dyslexia. I read the book and was intrigued, but I thought it sounded too good to be true. It claimed that I could transform in my wife's dyslexia from a burden into an asset in less than a week! It didn't help that the author was American - a lot of snake-oil has been "invented" in the USA.
