Her books now are plastered in blurbs by Hilton Als, Jonathan Safran Foer, Edmund White, Colm Tóibín, George Saunders, and Lydia Davis. Despite this, Tillman’s book is an accomplished and meaningful feat, representing women’s internal and external quandaries, while also exploring darker sides of human nature.

I think she was just as good, if more overt, in portraying the tribulations that paint/taint the various stages of womanhood.Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).

Tillman charts the girls’ unsteady drift into womanhood, revealing the multiple forms of inheritance– family, gender, culture – that a girl must swallow or rebel against.

They gave her 1980 novella, Weird F---s, a second life one year ago, and now they’ve moved on to Haunted Houses, her novel of 1987. Haunted Houses is about the past within the present, the inescapability of private memory and public history.

When the author released her work in the 80s and 90s apparently it wasn’t very popular, this was because (especially in Haunted Houses) her novel follows mundane women, they aren’t especially powerful or groundbreaking, they are just young women in America discovering their place in their world, and people didn’t care about these kind of women at the time. But I loved this element of the book, overall Haunted Houses felt like a guilty pleasure, it felt like I was peering into the lives of these women, seeing their ugly sides and mentalities towards themselves, their relationships and work, sides that the average person would rather die than reveal to those around them. Like you said, it’s a novel about the interiority of girls, and at the time that wasn’t a subject that was broached much in fiction.
