In a gentle and funny tone Evie King highlights both the bureaucracy and the humanity that is behind funerals organised under Section 46. Very interesting, well paced book about a council officer’s job burying those who have no-one else who can. Evie’s humour helps lift this book into something truly life-affirming: many people fear dying alone but Evie helps us see that it’s the life lived that’s important, not the bit right at the end.I question how typical her experiences are and whether the fact that Section 46 funerals are just good in her council because she's so invested in it and has a supportive council. This is a well-written memoir that had me streaming with tears one minute and snorting with laughter another. Evie's commitment to her people is commendable and she's the kind of worker you'd want assigned to your case. IT's obvious, though, that she cares for what she is doing, that these are actually people, and that is the real strength of the book. It's a job that encompasses plenty of persistent detective work, grief counseling, the obvious (and not so obvious) admin, and a tonne of empathy.

Above all, there's nothing morbid or depressing about this book - unless you count the behaviour and attitudes of some of the deceaseds' family members. Ashes to Admin’ lifts the coffin lid on those extraordinary personal stories that have been so often left unheard. As someone who works at a Council and studied death culture at university, it was probably inevitable that I would find Ashes to Admin immensely enjoyable. Evie is an Environmental Health worker, whose job is ensuring funerals are carried out where the funds aren't available either due to the family not being able to afford it, or indeed where no family exists. I got a response from the person on the death cert and got a response with the exact location of the scattering, along with a full eulogy!Evie offers a fascinating and often amusing insight into an aspect of death that is universally feared. In Ashes to Admin, Evie shows, however, that very few people aren’t loved, but that mourners can take various shapes.
