This time with their 5th studio album - The Magician's Birthday. This album continues the psychedelic foundations of the previous masterpiece... and contains a candidate of my all time favourite composition - the homonymous The Magician's Birthday. advantage of the opportunity.....much to my chagrin as i think it was just a way to fill up the time allowed to fill up an LP and If anyone ever wanted to know what a typical classic Uriah Heep album sounded like, this would be a fine The second album by the "classic" line up is a natural follow on to the magnificent "Demons and Wizards". All the elements are still in place, the Roger Dean Sleeve, the fantasy themes, and of course the great music. "Sunrise", which became the opener for the live set, sets the scene immediately, with Byron's first appearance being in the form of a controlled scream.

For the most part the production of The Magician's Birthday can be described as overblown... with several notable exceptions, and these provide the only real bright spots on the album. "Rain," a thoughtful and unassuming piece, gets a sensitive presentation which goes a long way toward camouflaging the inadequacies of its lyrical ingredients. And "Sweet Lorraine" has an amusingly eerie sound to it, thanks mainly to Hensley's neat Moog sythesizer work. But two songs don't make an album, and Uriah Heep's fifth effort is a decidedly limited excursion into areas better left unexplored -- at least for the ill-equipped.This recording covers the first "party" held in 2001. The highlight is undoubtedly the appearance of founder member Ken Hensley, who wrote most of the band's most famous works, and contributed the Hammond organ element of their wall of sound. The band play a commendable set covering a cross section of their songs through the years. great songs found here. "Rain" is the one song I can do with out, a rather generic, piano-dominated was something of a mess when compared to their previous albums. The deadline of this album had been organ that are penetrated with the scream-like yell of David Byron. It settles as the vocals are almost spoken. It builds.Themes are repeated. I like the organ play in The title tune is the only one of the eight selections that comes close to being interesting. Unfortunately, it just comes close. The album reminds me of those amateur opera singers who rent Carnegie Recital Hall to give recitals for their tone-deaf friends and for those knowledgeable aficionados who need a good laugh. Uriah Heep, however, takes it all utterly seriously. Give these boys a Dutch rub and six months under house arrest.
