Baseball is the undisputed top sport in Japan, and is jokingly called Japan's national sport (ironically, Japan actually has no officially recognized national sport—not even sumo or kendo). While most Japanese people would understand the word "baseball," locally it's called yakyu, or puro yakyu when describing the professional league. Even high school baseball is taken very seriously, with the National High School Baseball Championships (or Koshien) a much-watched event every summer. Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries. As I said earlier, if you don’t know the counter for an item, you can use the 一つ、二つ ( hitotsu, futatsu) system to count your objects up to ten. This will save you a lot of trouble if you memorize the Native Japanese numbers!

The increasing intensity of heavy rainfall events and associated flooding, such as those we are currently witnessing, is an expected consequence of a warming climate due to our emissions of greenhouse gases,” said Richard Allan, a professor in climate science at the UK’s University of Reading. In the YouTube video below, Craig Lieberman, a thoroughbred gearhead who used to own two A80 Supras, as well as an R34 Skyline makes an excellent point. While there’s no denying that the RB26 is an excellent engine, most of the hype surrounding it comes from the fact that it powered three generations of legendary sports cars. The four current banknotes of the Japanese yen, 1000-yen, 2000-yen, 5000-yen, and 10000-yen, have formal numbers 千, 弐千, 五千, and 壱万, respectively. For instance, 20 is called はたち ( hatachi) when someone turns 20 years old because that is the age when one is considered to become an adult. Its other irregularity is はつか ( hatsuka), which is the 20th day of the month. Kanji Numbers in Japanese: 1 – 1 Trillion! In Japanese, when long numbers are written out in kanji, zeros are omitted for all powers of ten. Hence 4002 is 四千二 (in contrast, Chinese requires the use of 零 wherever a zero appears, e.g. 四千零二 for 4002). However, when reading out a statement of accounts, for example, the skipped digit or digits are sometimes indicated by tobi ( 飛び) or tonde ( 飛んで): e.g. yon-sen tobi ni or yon-sen tonde ni instead of the normal yon-sen ni. Don’t feel too discouraged about counters in Japanese. They may seem strange or foreign, but we use them all the time in English too.

As the planet warms, the expectation is that we will see “more and more intense, more frequent, more severe rainfall events, leading also to more severe flooding,” said Stefan Uhlenbrook, director of hydrology, water and cryosphere at the World Meteorological Organization. Most numbers have two readings, one derived from Chinese used for cardinal numbers ( On reading) and a native Japanese reading ( Kun reading) used somewhat less formally for numbers up to 10. In some cases (listed below) the Japanese reading is generally preferred for all uses. Archaic readings are marked with †. I N THE ECONOMIST’s 2022 glass-ceiling index, an annual measure of the role and influence of women in the workforce in 29 countries, only South Korea scored lower than Japan. The World Economic Forum’s 2022 Global Gender Gap Report, which also factors in political representation, ranked Japan 116th out of 146 countries. That would have been little surprise to Japanese women, who are used to living in a strict patriarchal society. The government aspires to create a society “in which all women shine”, a slogan that seems unintentionally ironic, since Japanese women have always lived in the shadow of men. Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting of the imperial court in the 11th century who wrote “The Tale of Genji”, thought to be the first novel in history, described the discrimination she suffered. She wrote in her diary that her father would often sigh and say, “If only you were a boy.” Such a sentiment is familiar to Japanese women 1,000 years later. They routinely abandon their professional ambitions to prioritise their husbands and children. They are less visible in public life than women in other rich countries. These books, and one film, help to illuminate those Japanese—half the population—whom the government says it wants to usher into the light. Storms turning streets into rivers, trapping drivers and forcing rescues across the Northeast evoke memories of Hurricane Irene These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport. So the number 123-456-7890 would be いち に さん の よん ご ろく の なな はち きゅう まる( ichi ni san no yon go roku no nana hachi kyuu maru). Japanese Number Superstitions Countries like Japan are extremely alert, and they’re also very well prepared when it comes to flood defense measures,” Uhlenbrook said. “So even if it happens more frequently, they can probably manage this much better than low-income countries where there are no warnings in place, no flood defense structures [and] no integrated flood management plans.” The tip to remembering these numbers is that they all end in つ ( tsu) except for 10, which is とう ( tou).
