Like the bourbon bearing its name, there’s not much of Knob Creek but what there is rewards your finding it. Maker’s Mark’s claim to fame is that they distill their bourbon to the lowest proof in the whole of the US. It is a pet peeve of mine to spend mid 30 to mid 40ish for a bottle of bourbon that tastes like lighter fluid at worst and mediocre at best ! For those that have tasted only white label from the Jim Beam distillery, I can understand why they might be reticent to delve any deeper into the Beam portfolio.I’m glad they brought the age statement back, but honestly, it’s not like it became massively more oaky or refined. Rye, spice and barley malt come through alongside butterscotch and vanilla, rounded the drink off perfectly. It is named after the Kentucky area where Abraham Lincoln grew up, and it is alleged that the creek nearly killed him while he was swimming. In mouth, lively persistent bubbles with clean, soft creamy fruit, excellent intensity and a lingering finish.

I know I didn’t put this in the review, but I had a chance to sample a NAS Knob Creek Small Batch from 2018 and I could barely find any difference between the two. Part of a whiskey journey is discovering that different distilleries produce bourbons that have a distinct “profile” or set of aromas and flavors.
