The overall design, convenience, and comfort of the Speed Lite 24 earned it the title of the Best Overall Daypack on our list. The external stretch mesh side pockets are able to hold your large water bottles for additional water or storage if needed. The tensioned Delrin U-Frame provides exceptional flexibility with good load transfer without increasing overall weight. Many running vest style carrying systems have a couple of chest clips, but thanks to the overall fit of the harness I don't miss a second one here. Constructed with a V shape and a breathable foam back, the Speed Lite is ideal for high intensity hikes.

The point where the shoulder straps attach to the main body of the pack should be roughly half way down your shoulder blades; this ensures that the shoulder straps rolls evenly over the top of your shoulders to distribute the weight correctly. I used my arms and torso a lot with trekking poles out of necessity, and the pack never hindered even the most drastic movements. These simple loops open a world of opportunity by helping to strap additional items to the outside of the pack and offering the ability to really customize your storage and gear selections. With a logo reflector and a clip loop on the back for a bike light, the pack ensures you’ll be seen well into the night. The V-shaped back panel will also help keep the pack centered on your back, helping everything stay balanced while on the move.Designed for fast-paced hiking and trail running, side compression straps effectively reduce load wobble and enable full range of movement. The frame has been designed in such a way that it promotes freedom of movement and shares out a good balance of weight across the pack. Ice axe and trekking pole loops, a sternum strap and top lid attachment points make it easy to carry your essential accessories to make your walk enjoyable and accessible.

At the smaller end of the scale there's the running-oriented Ascender, a model we'll also be reviewing this summer. The Deuter Speed Lite 24 (also available in 12L, 16L, 20L, 22L SL, 26L, 30L SL, and 32L) is my first Deuter pack and has far exceeded my expectations. While the smaller packs in the range are zip entry, the higher capacity models, 30 and 28 SL (the shorter back length version aimed at female users) have a lid.

The opposite fin of the hip belt has no pocket, but since it wouldn't affect breathability I think it probably ought to. Reduced to the essential, they are ideal for comfortably carrying light to medium loads depending on the volume. Once you've got the back length sorted, either by selecting the correct size pack or adjusting the back system, you can begin to follow these simple steps to help achieve a comfortable carry. Daisy-chain loops with a larger bottom loop sit on both sides of the front pocket, conceivably allowing the wearer to clip a substantial amount of climbing gear to the outside of the pack. Lite System: These lightweight backpacks come into their own during endurance sports and Alpine day treks.

Reinforced zips allow pockets to be accessible even with gloved hands, shoulder straps are streamlined to reduce wind drag and also features an attachment loop for glasses. Contrary to popular belief, your torso length and not your overall height is the key to getting a well fitted pack. None the less the Speed Lite provides great carrying comfort and pleasant ventilation for athletic tours or alpine adventures in challenging terrain thanks to its new Lite Air contact back system. As a small rucksack for summer hillwalking and scrambling - and even, at a pinch, running - I think it's fantastic, and I only have one complaint (of which more later). The women's Speed Light 24 SL takes the classic top-loading design and combines it with modern materials, the result. The Speed Lite 24 acted as my sole training pack while recovering from knee surgery; the 10-pound starter weight seemed appropriate for both the condition of my frail leg and the seemingly minimal suspension system. A zipped pocket on the other shoulder is officially the place for electronics, but its long vertical zip feels insecure and makes it pretty useless for holding anything small and loose like snacks. Built To Send have created a surprisingly simple piece of equipment, but one made from the highest quality materials, and with a level of care and deliberation that sets it apart" says Toby Archer. Deuter has again managed to create a daypack that will let you carry everything you need for a day in the backcountry or a trek through the city. The Speed Lite 26 and 32 both come with top lids and drawstring top-loading access to the main compartments. As mentioned earlier, there are also zippered pockets attached to the hip belt for smaller items —like a multi-tool or snacks.
